It was an organized and established kingdom - the Chogyal Kingdom, established in the 17th century. Under certain understanding with the British, the Kingdom and Monarchy rule continued until independence. After independence, it remained as a protected state of India. In 1972, when its internal situation became uncontrollable, it preferred to become a regular state of India. This was accepted by India, brought the situation under control and granted statehood from 16.5.1975.
