INTERNATIONAL ASTRONOMICAL UNION - established in 1919, it acts as the authority for assigning designations to celestial bodies like stars, planets etc. It is headquartered at Paris, France. It has members who have Ph.D degrees and there are about 9800 members, with a sizeable female members.

Started in 1873, as International Meteorological Organization and came to be known as "World Meteorological Organization" from 1950 and forms part of the United Nations. Headquartered at Geneva, Switzerland and has 190 member countries. Takes care of all meteorological activities including naming all tropical cyclones which occurs regularly in the Caribbean Sea, US etc.,

Tropical cyclone in 1864, famines in 1866 and 1867 in Bengal was the background for starting the Indian Meteorological Department. Sir John Elliott was the first Director General.

Headquartered at Delhi, it has regional offices at Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkatta, Nagpur and Guwahati.

International Hydrographic Organization, established in 1921, and came to be known as such from 1970. It is headquartered at Monaco. It has about 85 member countries who have maritime interests.

International Union of Forest Research, headquartered at Austria. Founded in 1892, it has about 110 member countries.

Part of the World Meteorological Organization, (UN Agency) to monitor trends in the Earth's atmosphere. Established in 1989 and conducts studiesand research on various factors governing the environmental concern.

UN's subsidiary organization towards providing safe drinking water, and sanitation to all, by identifying areas that require such facilities.
