It was a princely state during British rule by Kanglapak rulers. After the end of world war II, under the Manipur Constitution Act 1947, a legislature was formed with the Maharaja Budha Chandra at the helm. In 1949, the legislature was dissolved and it was annexed with India in October 1949. From 1949 to 1956 it was part of the North East Frontier Agency and in 1956, it was declared as a Union Territory and on 21.1.1972 became a full fledged state.
