Q2. What are the organs involved in the digestive system?
It comprises of alimentary canal to the anus, involving mouth, tongue, teeth, salivary glands, gullet (food  pipe), liver, pancreas, intestines.
Q3. What does the mouth consists of?
It consists of teeth, tongue, and salivary glands.
Q4. What is a tooth made of?
Enamel - the hardest and highly mineralized substance, along with dentis, cementum and dental pulp.
Q5. How many teeth are there for an average adult?
32 - Thirty two.
Q6. What is the distribution of teeth?
Incissors - 8 - Cutting and biting of the food. Cannes - 4 - For tearing the food. Premolars - 8 - Chewing of food. Molars - 12 - Chewing of food.

Q8. Which tooth is known as "Wisdom teeth"?
Molar 3. Normally erupting between 17-21 years.
Q9. What is the common disease that affects teeth?
Plaque.
Q10. What is "carries" related to teeth?
They are cavities formed by tooth decay.
Q11. What is the study for teeth and related matters?
Dental Course in Bachelor and Master's level.
Q12. What is the medical terms for specialists in teeth and related matters?
Generally called Dentists. Depending upon their speciallization in Gum, Surgery etc, they may be called Orthodontists, Periodontists.
Q13. Pyorrhea affects?
Gums. (Periodontist the specialist on gums)
Q14. Which teeth is used for grinding food?
Canine.
Q15. What hardens the teeth?
Fluorine.
Q16. What is the tongue made of?
Skeletal muscle and the strongest in the human body. It is useful for manipulation of food for chewing and swallowing and also feel the taste of the food.
Q17. Where are the salivary glands located and what are their use?
They are located below the tongue and secretes "Saliva" which gets mixed with food and makes the food easy for chewing. Converts carbohydrates into maltose.
Q18. Where is the food pipe located and how is it called?
A tubular path way for the food to pass, from throat to the stomach. It is generally called Gullet and clinically it is Esophagus - 25 cm long - Also called Pharynx.
Q19. How much time does the food take normally to reach the stomach?
7 seconds.
Q20. Where is the stomach located?
Lies between Esophagus (Gullet) and Dudoenum the beginning of small intestine, on the left side of the abdominal cavity.
Q21. What is stomach?
It is the second stage of the digestive system. A bean shaped hollow muscular organ which stores food and digests them. In the stomach "Gastric Juices" containing enzymes and hydrochloric acid are secreted. The juice contains 90% water, 5% enzymes and 5% hydrochloric acid. The hydrochloric acid kills all the bacterial germs, while the enzymes (pepsin, renins, and Gastric lipase) and water helps in digestion.
Q22. How does the enzymes and Hydrochloric acid react in processing the food into energy substances?
1. Pepsin and Hydrochloric acid converts protein into peptones and proteoses. 2. Renin curdles milk into casein. 3. Gastric Lipase converts fat into glycerol and fatty acids.
Q23. Where is Pancreas and What is its function?
A long organ (similar to a tongue or needle leaf) located below the stomach. It produces the pancreatic juices containing several enzymes which act on proteins, carbohydrates and fats. Amylase catalyzes hydrogen of starch, lipase acts on fat, converting it into glycerol and fatty acids. The pancreatic juices along with bile juice (alkaline) from the liver plus the intestinal juices from the small intestine meets the food pulp in the duoderum.
Q24. What is "Small intestine"?
It is a tubular gastro intestinal tract forming the third stage of the digestive system. It is also "gut". It starts from out of the stomach. It is about 6 to 7 metres long and 2 cm in dia. Part of this intestine near the stomach is called Duodenum. It is divided into three parts: Duodenum - 26 cm / 9.84 inches. Jejunum - 2.5 mtr / 8.2 feet. Ileum - 3.5 mtr / 11.5 feet. Actually it is longer than the large intestine. Because of it's width, it is called the small intestine.
Q25. What is the function of the small intestine?
It is where the larger part of the digestion takes place. Here the pulpy food gets mixed with bile and pancreatic juices. While on it's movement towards the larger intestine, through the projections in the small intestine, iron, vit. B12, Bile salts, water, sodium, fructose are all absorbed to the body. The movement of the food through food pipe, through stomach and intestines is called Peristalsis movement (contraction of the pipes walls).
Q26. What is the large intestine?
The end part of the digestive system also called as colon. It is about 1.4 to 1.5 mtrs long. Major part of the water content from the undigested material received from the small intestine and sends the waste material to the rectum for discharge through arms.
Q27. What constitutes the saliva?
Water, mucin, mineral salts, ptyalin (enzymes).
Q28. What is gastric ulcer?
Ulceration of the stomach.
Q29. What is the chief enzyme that acts as emulisified fat?
Lipase.
Q30. What are the enzymes secreted in the stomach?
Pepsin and Renin
