Q1. What is a game of Tennis?
An individual / team (a pair) game played with a small rubberized ball and with a racquet in hand, played over a rectangular field with a net in the centre. Played by both men and women.

4 serves make a game and 6 games makes a set. Normally played for 5 sets for men and three for women. Scores: 0 (Love) to 15, 15 to 30, 30 to 40 and 40 to game. 6 games make a set. A player can win a set with a minimum difference of two games.
Q6. What are the various terminologies used in tennis?
ACE: A service landing correctly and the opponent fails/unable to attend it is called so. This term is also used in other service oriented games as well.
ALLEY: Area of the court between the singles and doubles side lines - often called the Tramlines.
ATP: Association of Tennis Players.
BACK HAND : A stroke - right handed player playing the ball that comes to his left side and directing it to the opponent court and vice versa with a left hander.
BAGEL: A set win by 6-0.
BASE LINE : The line at the farthest end of the court indicating the end of the playing area.
BLOCK: To defensively play the shot with less back swing, usually while returning a service.
BREAK: To win a game as the receiving player or team, thereby breaking the service advantage of the opponent. Also called "Service Break".
BREAK POINT : Score of 30-40 in which the 40 is the receiver's score and win of this point gives a game win, though he is not the server.
BYE : A common team in all sports. A player/team advancing to the next stage without playing a match.
CHIP: Blocking a shot with under spin.
COURT : The playing area. Common to badminton, volleyball, etc.
DEAD NET : When a player's shot, hitting the net and falling on the receiver's court for a point.
DEEP: A shot landing near the base line.
DOUBLE FAULT : Server making two consecutive faults in service.
DEUCE : Score at 40-40 is called so. Server/receiver both winning a point at this stage is called Advantage to the player concerned. Winning a point again by the same player completes the game or else the process continues, till won by any of the two/team.
DROP SHOT : A shot played with soft hand, just enough to sail over the shot.
FAULT : A server failing to place the ball in the correct area of play.
FORE HAND : Hitting a ball from behind the body, with the racquet hand facing the ball. The opposite of this is back hand.
GAME POINT : A team/player needing just that point to win a game.
FIRST SERVE : The first of two services allowed.
GOLDEN SET : A set won without losing a point.
GOLDEN SLAM: Winning grand slams and Olympic Gold in the same year.
GRAND SLAM : Winning Wimbledon + US Open + French Open + Australian Open in the same year.
GROUND STROKE : A fore hand or backhand stroke executed after one bounce on the court.
HALF VOLLEY : A volley shot made after a short bounce.
LET : A science that touches the net and lands in the server's court, the service is void and the server gets a retake of that serve.
LOB : Hitting a ball sufficiently high above the net sometimes over the head of opponent.
LOVE GAME : A game won without the opponent scoring a point.
MATCH POINT : Needing one more point to win a match.
OUT : Ball landing outside the playing area.
RALLY : A series of return hits between players. A common term in badminton, volley ball, table tennis etc., mostly in singles/doubles games only.
SERVE : Hitting the ball to the opponent's court, directly to begin a point common to Badminton, Volleyball, Table tennis. Only thing to be ensure is that the ball lands in the opponent's court.
SECOND SERVE : Second of Final service of a player at the beginning of a point.
SERVICE GAME : The player/team winning the game in their own service.
SMASH: A powerful overhead shot taking a steep course into the opponent's area.
SET : The first to win 6 games, with a difference of two games from the other.
TIE BREAKER : A method of deciding the winner of a set when the score is 6 games each and played over 12 service points and the player wins the game (which may be in any order of a set), with a difference of two points. It was introduced by James Wallen in 1965.
VOLLEY : A method of stroking the ball before it bounces.
WALK OVER : A common terminology for an unopposed victory like Bye. It is a general term used in all fields wherever a person wins without any opponent.
WILD CARD: A common terminology where a player/team is allowed to play in a tournament without adequate ranking or has not registered in time for the tournament.

(2) FEDERATION CUP : Started from 1963. Played in the format of Davis Cup for women only.

(4) AUSTRALIAN OPEN : One of the major tournament started from 1905 and held in January every year, conducted by Tennis Australia. It was earlier played Kooyong Park, a grass court and now played at Flinders Park. The male winners are awarded Norman Brookes Cup and the female winners are awarded Daphne Ackhurst Cup.
(5) FRENCH OPEN : Started from 1925, conducted by French Tennis Association. Held in May every year. It is a clay court called Rolland Garros.
(6) WIMBLEDON: Started in 1877, and held in June & July Every year. Oldest and prestigious tournament.
(7) U.S.OPEN: Started from in 1881 at club leven and became open era in 1968 and held in August/September every year. Played at Flushing Meadow in New York. The only grand slam tournament that is decided on tie-braker basis.
