William G. Morgan of USA around 1895 and named it as Mintonette. Later it was renamed as Volley Ball by Alfred S.Halstead.
Q3. What is a game of volley ball?
A team game played with 6 players each side, playing with an air filled synthetic rubber ball, in a rectangular field, over a net placed much higher than the average human height. A game requiring skill, power, stamina and presence of mind, played with hands only by both sex. The playing area is called "Court".
Q4. What is the size of the court and what are the markings inside?
1. LENGTH: 18 mtrs, width 9 mtrs divided into two halves by a net & centre line at the 9th mtr thus making the playing area into two squares of 9 x 9 mtrs.
2. NET: Width 1 mtr; placed at a height of 2.43 mtrs for men and 2.24 mtrs for women above the ground placed at the centre of the court.
3. ATTACK LINE: From the centre point - 3 mtrs inside each playing area on both sides dividing the playing field as "Front" and "Back" row.
4. BLOCKS: Court divided into 6 blocks - not by any actual markings, numbered 1 to 6, commencing from server as No.1. Lower half of the court will have 5, 6 & 1 blocks and the front half with have 2, 3, 4 Blocks (actually meaning players). Players will have to rotate for service purpose every time the service changes.
5. EXTERNAL PLAYING AREA : Though not for regular playing, an area of 3.5 mtr beyond the actual playing field is marked "free zone" on all the sides to enter & play within after service. This area is used for service and to retrieve any air borne ball into play.
Q5. What is the ball made of and what are the specifications?
Made of leather or synthetic leather inflated with compressed air. Circumference is 65-67 cms.
Q6. How the game of volley ball is played?
The ball will be served by a team over the net to the other side and the team receiving it will send it back within a maximum of three touches, which process continues till the ball is grounded. The game is thus played for 25 points and the team reaching first with a difference of 2 points is the winner, which is called a set/game. The game is played for 5 games for men and 3 games for women.

ACE: A service landing correctly and goes untouched.
BOMB: A hard driven ball that dips vertically, normally in a smash, or sometimes in a jump serve which lands like a bomb.
CUT: An attack with an angle.
DIP/DINK/TIP/CHEAT: A player jumping for an attack or smash only to show a dummy when actually another player attacks.
DEEP DISH: A "Set" that is held excessively long, typically set from below shoulders.
DIG: A defensive contact following an opponent's attack resulting in a playable ball.
DOUBLE: A double contact, result of a botched (improper) setting.
DUMP: A surprise attack usually by a front row setter to catch the defense off-guard.
FLOATER: A non-spinning serve that is unpredictable because it's path is perturbed by the air currents above the court.
HAMMER: Hitting a ball extremely hard.
JUMP FLOAT : A jumping float serve.
JUMP SERVE : The serving player tosses the ball in the air and into the field and then uses an attack approach to jump and serve the ball.
KILL : When a team attacks the ball and the defending teams is unable to play the ball.
KONG: A one handed blocks, usually because the blocker is late.
LIBERO: An Italian word for "free". A special defensive indoor position - a player forming part of the six.
LIFT/CARRY: An illegal contact where the ball is lifted / sticks.
PASS: The first contact of the ball.
PIPE: A ball set towards the middle of the court for a back row attack.
ROLL SHOT: An attacker hits the set softly, putting extra top spin on the ball.
SIDE OUT: When the team that served the ball, losses the rally, causing the other team to serve the next point.
SPIKE: When an offensive player attacks the ball with an one arm motion done over the head, attempting to a kill.
STUFF ROOF: When a defensive player jumps above the height of the net, blocks the ball and the ball goes back to the person who attacks the ball.
TEN: A ball set for a back row attack.
TOOL: An attack which is deflected off an opponent usually during a block, and is unplayable resulting in a point and/or side out for the attacking team.
TRAP: A ball set too close to the block where the hitter typically gets stuffed.
WIPE/SWIPE: When one player pushes the ball against the opponent's block and physically wipes the ball out of bound.
TIME OUT : Forming a T shape by hands by the referee.
