He annexed the Chola territories of Gangavadi and parts of Nalambavadi, subdued all the surrounding small chieftains and founded this kingdom first. His first attempt to take on Vikramaditya of Chalukyas failed, but succeeded over Someshvara III of the Chalukyas by defying his authority.
BALLALA II -1173 - 1220 - He was the son of Vijaya Narasimha I who succeeded Vishnuvardhana. He had to face some tough time for 20 years of his early period from the Chalukyan feudatories around. He had series of battles with Yadavas and successfully fought against the Kadambas. When the Chalukyas started declining, he declared his kingdom independent.
NARASIMHA III -1254 - 1291 & BALLALA III - 1292 -1343 - Narasimha III was able to preserve and protect his kingdom against the regular invasions of Yadavas in the north. He was succeeded by his son Ballala III. Despite the rebellish feudatories of his own kingdom and the Pandyas from South waging frequent wars, he was able to protect and preserve his kingdom upto 1310, when Malik Kafur over powered him. Malik Kafur was the general of Alauddin Khilji. However, for another three decades he was able to sustain against Khiljis and Tughlaqs before succumbing in the battle against the Sultan of Madurai at Trichinopoly and thus came the end of Hoysala dynasty with Ballala III.
